Staffing:

Service Focus:

Specialist service that provides services for women living in the BOP area who develop moderate to severe mental health problems during their pregnancy and for up to 12mths after their baby is born. MMH also offers consultation for clients in the existing mental health service. (We do not automatically take over the care of existing mental health clients; we work alongside the existing case managers). Crisis team still provide care for urgent situations and we also access mobile intensive nursing team for support if clients are very unwell.

Types of Service:

Assessment and range of treatments offered

Referral Process:

Referrals are received from midwives, Plunket, GP’s, and other mental health and hospital staff. (Paediatricians, obstetricians etc). Initially all referrals are processed via the CMH intake co-ordinator. These are triaged, and if appropriate it goes to the multidisciplinary team meeting, and if accepted, the MMH worker will do an initial assessment to determine follow up required.

Comments:

We have MMH service level agreements with maternity and inpatient MH unit, which works well. At present MMH in Tauranga will remain at two staff, as the service is fairly new (began in 2003) and numbers do not yet indicate more staffing, however we are slowly getting busier and case loads are increasing. Cover from Waihi Beach through to Paengaroa. MMH is based at CMH and link in with the existing CMH adult teams to access psychiatrists etc. Often link in with other existing MH staff as needed for OT input, psychology, social work etc.
