Staffing:

Two multidisciplinary mental health professional teams (inpatient and outpatient) including: Psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, psychologist, social worker, infant specialist, Karitane nurse, psychotherapist and dietician.

Service Focus:

Inpatient and outpatient service for mothers with a moderate to severe degree of mental or suspected mental illness.
Referral acceptance in second trimester for baby up to12 months of age.
Follow up to infant 12- 15 months of age.

Types of Service:

Assessment and comprehensive range of treatments offered. Also offers education, liaison and support, teleconferencing and visits to all South Island District Health Boards.

Referral Process:

Referrals are accepted via: Outpatients, primary care mental health – GP where possible. Christchurch Women’s Hospital. Some Plunket referrals via Postnatal Adjustment Programme.

Comments:

Demand on the outpatient service is beyond the staffing capacity hence significant waiting list

Service Focus:

Community support groups run by the PND Family/Whanau NZ Trust for mothers and primary caregivers suffering from PND and associated anxiety disorders.    

Staffing: A mother who has personally experienced PND acts as facilitator, two child minders and a number of volunteers with an active interest in supporting mothers with PND.
Comment: Two groups in Christchurch City, run during the school term.  Numbers are limited and there may be a short waiting list.
