Babies and Feeding

Babies vary in their feeding demands and requirements. Newborn babies often feed frequently and for many babies the frequency increases in the evening.

It can be worrying not knowing if they are getting enough milk, especially if you are breast feeding. If you are breast feeding and worried about this a lactation consultant may be helpful.

Your baby’s cues for feeding may include:

  • Nuzzling.
  • Hand sucking.
  • Mouthing.
  • Crying.

You may feel a lot of pressure from family, friends or health professionals regarding breastfeeding or formula feeding. It is important to try to find support for yourself in making the decision that is right for you.

“I really wanted to breast feed, I knew it was best and I really tried but it just wasn’t working, I was so exhausted and it seemed to take forever. My breasts got very sore with cracked nipples. When I had to give up I felt devastated. It was a big loss, I cried and cried. I felt I had let my baby down.”
- Sandy

“I tried to help but I didn’t know what to do – every time I said it was OK not to breastfeed she would argue with me and tell me I was a bloke who didn’t understand – in the end I just tried to comfort her when she cried.”
- Bruce
