The following is a list of the medications most commonly used to stabilise mood. These medications may also be used for other purposes.
Salts
Lithium Carbonate (Lithium Carbonate, Lithicarb, Priadel)
Anticonvulsants
So called because these medications are also effective in the treatment of epilepsy
Sodium Valproate (Epilim) Carbamazepine (Tegretol) Lamotrigine (Lamictal) Topiramate (Topamax) Gabapentin (Neurontin,Nupentin)
Second Generation Antipsychotics
These are effective in treating psychosis and are also used as mood stabilisers.They have been developed since the first generation antipsychotics and act in a way that is different to the older antipsychotics
Risperidone (Risperdal) Olanzapine (Zyprexa) Quetiapine (Seroquel) Ziprasidone Aripiprazole (Abilify)
