Talking treatments

What are these?

  • Talking treatments are a therapy that involves you talking about the way you feel, think, and act.
  • The therapist listens to you and helps you gain new understandings of yourself so that you can make changes in your life.
  • Therapy can be provided by a variety of professionals such as counsellors, nurses, general practitioners (GP), psychologists and psychiatrists. Each of these professionals have had different training and will vary in their approach.

Why don't I just talk to a friend?

  • Talking to a therapist is quite different to talking to a friend.
  • Your therapist has specialised training and has knowledge of research, theory and treatment approaches.
  • Your therapist is an objective person who can offer a neutral view as opposed to a friend who is likely to be emotionally involved and may be biased towards a certain viewpoint.

How much will it cost?

  • You may be eligible for therapy in the public health system or you may decide to see someone in private practice.
  • It is best to see your GP who can help you access public services, if appropriate, or may be able to recommend someone you could see privately.
  • Private therapy sessions can be expensive ranging from $60 to $150 per session. There are some private organisations who offer counselling at reduced rates.

It is important thing is to find someone you like, feel confident and comfortable with and who has experience with your type of problem.

See the Support section for more information on how to find a counsellor or therapist.
